How is it that the basketball programs at both Kent State and Akron, as well as the Akron soccer team can all be extremely good, but the football teams at the 2 schools are absolute disasters??? The Last 4 MAC Champions in men’s basketball have been Akron 3 times and the other was Kent State. Since 2000, the Golden Flashes have won the men’s basketball tournament 6 times and the Zips have won it 6 times. The Zips soccer team is always ranked in the Top 25, they have been in the Top Ten this year. Oh and by the way, the Zips soccer team won the National Championship in 2010 and were the runners up in 2009 and 2018. So all the success in those 2 sports but the football teams are constantly among the worst in the country. Kent State lost 21 in a row before finally getting a win this season. The last 2 years they were 1-11 and 0 and 12. The Zips aren’t any better. Akron is 11 and 57 since 2019 and this year in 2 games have been outscored 78-0. So other sports, both schools can figure it out, but football, the most lucrative college sport, they are both as bad as ever. Maybe they turn it around one day or maybe this is just the way it is. Wouldn’t it be nice if one or both was actually competitive in football. Yes it would.
