Major League Baseball will put in a challenge system for balls and strikes in the 2026 season after the league’s competition committee voted to begin the era of robot umpiring. The first thought I had when hearing this was it’s about time. How many years have we gone with so many outrageous calls behind the plate? I’m old enough to remember the Indians in the 1995 World Series against the Atlanta Braves. That entire series was the Braves pitchers getting strike after strike call no matter how far out of the strike zone the balls were. That was 30 years ago and the umpires still have so many issues with consistency behind the plate. The teams are going to get to challenge a couple of calls again, which is better than nothing. I just can’t believe it took this long. Tennis for years has been using technology to try to get calls close to the lines right. I guess it’s better late than never. In reality this is a good thing, but a good thing that MLB should have already using for years. Just wait until the playoffs when the ump behind the plate makes several bad balls and strikes calls. Then you will probably feel the same way I do.
