The World Series is here and then the offseason for baseball will be here before you know it. After the 2026 season, who knows what will happen. More than likely there will be a work stoppage after next season, and both the owners and the players union is already preparing for it to be a long drawn out battle. Chances of the 2027 season being played in its entirety seem slim. The owners have already been discussing a salary cap and also a salary cap floor. The floor is that each team will have to spend at least a certain amount of money, and the cap at the top would keep from all the overspending in the game that is already going on. The small market teams have trouble competing with the big spenders. The Dodgers and the Blue Jays are in the World Series. The Dodgers payroll is the highest at 350 million and the Blue Jays are 5th at 250 million. There are 5 teams that spend below 100 million, which includes the Marlins, who spent just 67 million. The Guardians are barely over 100 million. The players of course want no cap and will fight to keep it from happening. But in order for the sport to try to stay relevant like the NFL and NBA, the owners need the cap. The best thing about the NFL is that any year, any team can win the Super Bowl. Baseball is to the point now where it seems like 10 to 12 teams possibly have a shot to win the title and the other 18 to 20 teams, will never have a shot. It’s time for a change, no matter how long it takes. Baseball needs to get itself into the salary cap world like the other leagues, whether the players like it or not.
