Akron officer shooting bodycam video released

By John Maczko Nov 20, 2025 | 7:56 AM

Bodycam video and 911 calls from an officer-involved shooting in Akron last week has been released.  An Akron police officer shot a reportedly intoxicated man who was allegedly pointing a semi-automatic handgun at citizens, threatening people in a parking lot.  It happened on November 11th, when police responded to Albrecht Avenue after several 911 calls were made about a man pointing a gun at people.  The bodycam video shows an officer giving several warnings to the man to get his hands out of his pockets and to get on the ground .  Police say he was uncooperative, and the officer was forced to make a split-second decision to ensure his safety and that of the community and fired his weapon 15 times.  Officers gave first aid to the man before paramedics arrived on scene.  He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.  Police say the suspect remains in the hospital with injuries they described as non life-threatening.  Based on available footage, it did not appear that officers recovered a firearm.  The officer involved is on paid administrative leave.  The Bureau of Criminal Investigations responded to the scene and will conduct the investigation.  After the investigation, the case will be submitted to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office for review before being submitted to the Summit County Grand Jury for evaluation.
