Fairlawn receives $21 million grant

By John Maczko Dec 29, 2025 | 7:15 AM

The City of Fairlawn received a $21 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program, officials announced Friday. The money will be used to improve safety on busy Route 18, where there have been at least five deadly accidents, mostly involving people walking across the busy highway and being hit by cars. One of the biggest concerns is people who are dropped off at a bus stop and decide to cross seven lanes of traffic, sometimes wearing all dark clothing, and most often ignoring the designated crosswalks. Fairlawn city leaders have worked tirelessly to improve safety measures for everyone who travels in the area. The Federal Highway Administration will get in touch with city officials to work out details of the safety plan, how the money will be funded to the city, and what federal officials want to see.
