Loud boom across NE Ohio

By John Maczko Mar 18, 2026 | 7:37 AM

People from across Northeast Ohio reported hearing a loud boom yesterday morning.  The National Weather Service and NASA both confirmed that the loud boom, which occurred around 9am, was caused by a meteor.  The region likely experienced the sonic boom as the meteor entered the earth’s atmosphere.  NASA says the meteor was travelling 45 thousand miles per hour, was nearly 6 feet in diameter, and weighed about 7 tons before breaking up into fragments that landed across Medina County.  The boom rattled homes and startled residents across the area, but there was no report of injuries.
