Akron City Council has approved an amended $785 million operating budget for 2026, trimming about $13 million from last year’s budget. Council voted 11 to 2 in favor of the new spending plan. One of the ways Akron Mayor Shammas Malik’s administration slimmed down the budget was by eliminating 35 unfilled full-time positions and cuts to overtime for the city’s safety forces. The goal, Malik said, is to save $2,5 million in overtime to the fire department and $2 million in police overtime. Last week, heads of the police and fire union said overtime cuts could affect emergency response times.
