Push to abolish property taxes

By John Maczko Apr 6, 2026 | 7:48 AM

This November, voters could see a question on the statewide ballot that would do away with property tax here in Ohio.  The state office of budget and management calculates the elimination of all property taxes in the state would amount to a loss of as much as $24 billion dollars.  Property taxes across the state of Ohio pay the majority of the budget of the schools, police, fire EMS, parks, libraries, and other government services.  Governor Mike DeWine has suggested that abolishing property taxes in the state would force a dramatic increase in state sales tax to as high as 18-20 percent and/or a dramatic increase in state income tax.
