Multiple concrete barriers are now in place to block off a section of parking on West Market street in front of several bars in Akron’s Highland Square. According to a news release, the city said the barriers will be present through the fall. And according to city officials, you can also expect to see more officers patrolling the area from 9pm to 3am on Friday and Saturday nights to curb illegal open container activity. In recent years, Highland Square has seen an increase in safety issues, including a shooting last fall that left one man dead, as he was caught in the crossfire. Visitors to Highland Square are encouraged to park in the city lot behind the Chipotle Plaza and other street parking areas.
