Data center ban

By John Maczko Apr 15, 2026 | 7:56 AM

Several Portage County communities, joining a list of other communities, looking to limit data centers after strong opposition from residents.  Ravenna City Council’s Planning Committee recently voted to ban data centers for 12 months.  The decision came just days after Shalersville Township trustees extended the township’s moratorium on data centers by 6 months.  Tallmadge is also considering a 6 month moratorium on data centers, with a public hearing scheduled for tonight.  Late last year, Norton officials rejected a proposal by Quantum HPC, which wanted to construct a data center on a 90 acre site off South Cleveland-Massillon Road.  Data centers have become popular across Ohio, as tech companies take advantage of the state’s generous tax breaks.
