Legendary Ellet High School football coach Joe Yost has passed away at the age of 73. Yost went 234-152-2 in 38 seasons and holds the Akron Public Schools record for most career wins as a football coach. He also taught Physical Education and Health, working 36 years at Ellet and 3 years at Hyre Middle School. Yost always says his biggest win was in the snowy and cold 1989 City Series Thanksgiving day Championship game against Ricky Powers, great running back, and Buchtel. Ellet won the game 7 to 6. Buchtel was coming off back to back state titles in 1987 and 1988. During Yost’s coaching tenure, Ellet won or share 8 City series titles and made the state playoffs 3 times, 1991, 2012, and 2013. The face of Ellet football for nearly 4 decades, Yost died yesterday. His wife of 38 years, Patty, died back in 2016.
