Akron officers injured in fire

Two Akron residents and eight police officers were treated at a hospital after a fire tore through a duplex on Arch Street, behind City Hospital, overnight.  Akron firefighters were called to the residence just before midnight after receiving reports of a fire with people trapped inside.  When crews arrived, they found heavy fire on the first and second floors of the duplex.  One person was trapped on the third floor and was rescued by firefighters. Three other residents had made it out of the home before firefighters arrived.  Akron and Summa police officers helped get the victims out.  Eight officers went to the hospital to be evaluated for smoke inhalation.  Paramedics also rescued and revived 2 dogs.  The American Red Cross is assisting the four adults displaced by the fire, as well as their two dogs.  It’s not clear whether the home had working smoke detectors, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
