A fire at an abandoned coal mine in Deerfield township is under investigation, mainly to verify what has been burning.

On October 3, Deerfield fire department responded to what was reported as a brush fire near a septic system on US route 224 and State route 225, according to a release from the Portage County Emergency Management Agency.

EMA Deputy Director Brett Lee reported to the Record Courier that the fire was an a refuse soil/pie on the property of the old coal mine.

The fire department is said to have dumped over 30 thousand gallons of water on the fire by October 5 and had more water on the area on October 7.

According to Lee, the fire department will continue to check the site since the temperature of the ground is about 300 degrees.
