Barrett Elementary school is one step closer to being demolished. The Akron School Board at last night’s meeting accepted a 1.16 million dollar grant from the Summit County Land Bank that will cover up to 75 percent of the total cost to demolish the former school in East Akron. The community has wanted it torn down for quite some time.
The board closed the building in 2012 due to low enrollment.
Akron police have reported trespassing incidents and breaking and entering. In May, a man was arrested for stealing copper wire from the boarded up building.
The land bank money to off set the cost of the demolition must be used by June of 2027.
