Most average baseball fans know that Major League Baseball is long overdue for a salary cap. Teams like the Mets and the Dodgers are spending 5 and 6 times what teams like the Guardians, Pirates, and Nationals are spending. Even so, it is still highly unlikely that it will happen. The players are dead set against any kind of salary cap and have no problem if there is a work stoppage at the end of 2026, to keep it that way. There may be a better chance of getting an agreement on a salary floor though. That means an amount is set for all the teams and they have to at least spend that amount on payroll. Then owners like the Dolans in Cleveland and others who refuse to spend money, would have to spend a certain amount or probably end up selling the team to someone who will. We all know that the salary cap would go a long way in helping Major League Baseball, but too much greed out there to think that will be anything more than just talk. The salary floor won’t solve all the problems, but could at least bring a little more balance between the teams. The other pro leagues figured out salary caps, MLB should too, but that still seems a long long way off. Work stoppage is on the way. Get ready now.
