Canton turns down federal grant

By John Maczko Dec 23, 2025 | 7:06 AM

Canton city leaders recently turned down a $2.9 million federal grant to hire 15 firefighters because the administration would have been responsible for one-third of their salaries, plus ongoing costs when the grant money ran out, according to a report in the Canton Repository.  The city’s safety director said that the city was offered a Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
