Officials say a suspect is in custody after Wayne County Sheriff Thomas Ballinger and a deputy were stabbed in West Salem on Tuesday morning. Both Ballinger and the deputy, identified as Sgt. Broome, were taken to Wooster Community Hospital. Broome was eventually airlifted to Summa Health Akron Campus. Both have since been treated and released. Authorities say the situation began at about 9:45 a.m., when a call came in about a suspicious man jumping on the caller’s fence, while talking about killing the caller’s family. The deputy who responded to the call gave the suspect a warning. But at 10:30 a.m., the sheriff’s office received another call about the suspect’s disorderly conduct, prompting multiple units to respond to a location on Congress Road. Around 11 a.m., there was reported being stabbed. Three minutes later, a second stabbing. Investigators later said the suspect was carrying a pocket knife. The suspect was located around 1pm and was talked into surrendering. He has not yet been identified.
