Akron police say 2 men started shooting at each other near a parking lot in the highland Square area early Sunday around 1am. Two bystanders were hit, one of them is in critical condition. Officers were already in the area on special detail, breaking up a nearby fight, when the shooting started. Police found 20 shell casings at the scene. According to Akron police, a 26 year old man and a 34 year old woman were struck by gunfire. The man remains in critical condition while the woman’s injuries appear to be non life-threatening. The shooting happened weeks after the city added new security measures to the popular nightlife strip. The city has hired private security on weekends and added more officers to the area this week.
