What’s with College Football and their Rankings?

By Ron Potesta Sep 15, 2026 | 5:16 PM

Let me start by saying that I’ve been a fan of college football since the early 1970’s and I understand why college football has pre-season and weekly rankings from beginning to end. What I don’t understand is why the geniuses at the NCAA would practically eliminate 80+% of the schools by doing these insane rankings so early. Think about it, there are one hundred and thirty-eight FBS programs in college football and once the preseason top-25 poll is announced, the other one hundred and thirteen schools have little to no chance at snagging a playoff spot.

It is my humble opinion that the NCAA should hold off on any preseason poll and wait until the first Sunday in October to do their first poll. By doing this, it gives every FBS school an even starting line at the beginning of the season. Imagine the anticipation, the speculating, the waiting, until that first official poll is released.

Not only would it be the right thing to do, it would also be the most talked about subject in the sports world during the month of September.
