Akron officer assaulted during arrest

An Akron police officer was assaulted as a burglary suspect attempted to grab her firearm during a struggle Monday.  Officials say officers were dispatched to the 900 block of Copley road for a report of people removing wood from a boarded-up vacant building.  When police arrived, an officer saw a suspect, identified as 56 year old Leotis Daggett, exiting the building and attempted to stop him.  Officials say, Daggett assaulted the officer and attempted to take her firearm during the ensuing struggle.  He was ultimately taken into custody.  a report says, the suspect bit and punched the officer, while bystanders watched, laughed, and recorded the video.  The officer was taken to the hospital for treatment and later released.  The suspect is in jail under a $100,000 bond.  The FOP called on Akron Mayor Shammas Malik and Akron City Council to publicly condemn the assault and urged the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office to pursue all charges supported by the evidence.
