Akron mayor delivers State of the City address

On his 33rd birthday and his 100th day in office, Akron Mayor Shammas Malik delivered the state of the City address. In his address, the mayor discussed the search for the city’s new police chief, saying he would like to change a city charter that prevents him from hiring from outside. Brian Harding has been acting chief since Steve Mylett stepped down. Malik wants to beef up the police department. He also said safety has been his top priority, and said the message is clear after Akron City Council recently passed a $815 million operating budget.
