Today, a town hall will be held in Akron where community leaders can ask questions and learn more about the final candidate for the city’s new police chief. Deputy Chief Brian Harding was announced as a finalist last week by Akron Mayor Shammas Malik. Harding has been acting Chief of the department since January. At the first town hall meeting over the weekend, many in the community shared their concerns about the culture of the Akron Police Department following the deadly officer-involved shooting of Jayland Walker in 2022. Harding has said he wants to implement more training and community engagement as tools to do better as a police department. The second town hall is tonight at 6 at Buchtel CLC on Copley Road.
