Akron voters to decide if new North High School building will be built

The Akron North High School building is 93 years old and voters will soon decide whether a new school will be built. The school board this week voted to place a 1.3 mill bond issue on the November ballot that would pay for a new $85 million North High School. Other Akron high schools—Ellet, Garfield, East, Firestone, and Buchtel—- have been rebuilt over the past 13 years. The district is also pursuing a 7.6 mill operating levy that would fund daily expenses. The operating levy and bond issue will appear on the ballot together, so voters in Akron will vote for or against the 2 issues as one unit. The school board recently approved $24 million in cuts to the budget, which included dozens of teaching positions. School leaders said this was necessary because the 5 year forecast showed the district spending more money that they’re bringing in, and they needed to balance the budget.
