Tense moments last night at Akron’s City Council meeting. Council members are now calling out Akron Mayor Shammas Malik for canceling this past weekend’s Juneteenth events. That cancelation came after recent violence at festivals across the area. The city says it was out of an abundance of caution, but council members say they were left out of discussions about the cancelations and that was wrong. Mayor Malik, in a press release here to WNIR says, the City of Akron will partner with the Akron Urban League to host a Juneteenth celebration tomorrow, from 1 to 7 pm at the John S. Knight Center. METRO Regional Transit Authority has also agreed to waive fares tomorrow, in order to facilitate transit access to the event. Mayor Malik said he will also work with event organizers to reschedule cancelled neighborhood celebrations for later this summer.
