Akron police released bodycam footage over the weekend after a man was shot and killed by an officer. Akron police responded to the 2200 block of East Avenue at a gas station just after 1am last Saturday for the report of a stolen vehicle. In surveillance video from the gas station, Akron officers walk up to the allegedly stolen vehicle, a U-Haul truck, and try to detain Michael Donnell Jones. The video shows police lunge into the truck and then the U-Haul drives away with the officers inside. Jones was shot twice in the torso, according to the Summit County Medical Examiner’s office. The officers then provided first aid to Jones until EMS arrived. He was later pronounced dead at the scene. In a release, police say they found a loaded gun near Jones. The Ohio BCI is investigating. The officer involved is a 2 and half year veteran of the Akron force.
