City of Akron, Jayland Walker’s family agree to settlement

The family of Jayland Walker has reached a $4.85 million dollar settlement with the City of Akron in a federal lawsuit related to Walker’s fatal shooting by Akron police more than 2 years ago. In a joint statement, the city announced the settlement would be paid in 4 installments over the next 4 years. In the release, Mayor Malik emphasized the administration’s commitment to ongoing dialogue with the community, including Walker’s family, to assess and improve safety policies. The mayor said they’ve already updated the city’s vehicle pursuit policy as a result of this ongoing view. Walker was involved in a police pursuit when officers say he fired shots at them from his vehicle. Walker was killed when 8 Akron officers fired more than 90 shots at him, 46 striking Walker. A Summit County grand jury previously declined to indict any of the 8 officers involved in the shooting.
